Congrats on being done Science 8 everyone!!
Today there was a review Kahoot, final exam and course feedback questionnaire completed. It was so great getting to know you all this semester :) The class set up their science fair and presented their Final Inquiry Projects to each other - great work everyone!
After, we agreed on the main ideas and content that was covered in this course and that might be on the final exam tomorrow morning - below is the content we came up with and students are allowed to make a double sided 'cheat sheet' for the exam tomorrow morning. Please bring your completed 'cheat sheet' and your textbook to class tomorrow! Final Inquiry Project work block.
Please hand in your work block logs and bibliography on Teams! The Microbiology Project was continued and then students researched and chose their Final Inquiry Project Topics!
Please hand in your Microbiology Projects and get your topic selection form signed by your parents/guardians! The class read pages 33-34 in their textbook and then took the following notes on bacteria, viruses and the immune system... -Micro-organisms = bacteria (prokaryotic), viruses (not living?) and some fungi (eukaryotic) -The immune system is a line of defense against pathogenic micro-organisms -1st line of defense = skin, saliva, stomach acid and mucus -2nd line of defense = white blood cells (WBC), fever, redness and swelling -Vaccines = can prevent the spread of diseases by using an inactivated or weakened part of the disease (viral or bacterial), so that your body can produce antibodies (created by WBC) -Antibiotics = are medicine made from micro-organisms to prevent bacterial diseases/infections. Over use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance -Immunity = resistance to a disease or pathogen -Herd Immunity = a group or population that is resistant/immune to a disease or pathogen - this means it cannot spread -Epidemic = regional or local outbreak of a disease -Pandemic = global outbreak of a disease Lastly, students worked on their Microbiology Project on Teams. The class started with an attendance question and then the Onion Cell Lab on page 36-37 was preformed in the textbook and questions 1-3 were answered. After, the review questions from yesterday were completed.
Please hand in your lab questions! Photosynthesis and cellular respiration were reviewed on pages 26 + 30. After, some review questions were handed out.
The class started off with white boarding about plant an animal cells and watched this video to add to their drawings. After, they did a self-test of labelling organelles and then worked on defining functions of the organelles in their plant and animal cell drawings from last class. Please hand in your plant and animal cell drawings + organelle definitions! Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells were examined through a Venn diagram and reading textbook pages 32-33 as a class. Next, students watched this Bill Nye video and then drew + labelled the organelles in a plant and animal cell. Today an attendance question was done and then students continued working on the organelle descriptions from yesterday. Next, students were taught how to use a microscope and learned the parts of a microscope. After, a short video on the history of microscopes was watched and then the 'Cheek Smear Lab' was completed. Please hand in all of these worksheets completed! Welcome back from winter break! Today we started a new unit - Cell Biology White boarding...
6 Characteristics of living things
-The cell is the basic unit of life -All organisms are composed of one or more cells -All cells come from other living cells Pages 10 and 22-23 were read from the textbook as a class and the following organelles in plant and animal cells were examined on pages 24-30. Today was a super sneaky last day before the holidays fun surprise!!
I hope you have a great winter break everyone :) The class completed their open book test for earth science and then continued to work on their 'Plate Tectonics Inquiry Project'. Congrats on officially being done the earth science portion of this course!
The 'Plate Tectonics Inquiry Project' is due on Friday! Please submit your Power Point on Teams. The class started off by celebrating each others 'Plate Tectonics Project' a then we worked on the 'Plate Tectonics Inquiry Project' for the rest of the class.
The 'Plate Tectonics Inquiry Project' is due on Friday! Please submit your Power Point on Teams. Today the class went over their open book practice test from last class and then started on their 'Plate Tectonics Inquiry Project' that is posted on Teams.
The 'Plate Tectonics Inquiry Project' is due on Friday! Please submit your Power Point on Teams. The class spent time celebrating each others 'Plate Tectonic Projects' at the beginning of class by going around and giving positive feedback to each group. Next, we did an open book test!
Please come see me if you were not here this day! Class started off with an attendance question and then we enjoyed a story about Turtle Island and some hot chocolate in the Tipi set up outside of the school. After, we watched some videos about underwater volcanoes and electromagnetism. Then we completed the last set of earth science notes on Earthquakes and ended class with a guided meditation through Headspace. Please make sure your 'Plate Tectonics Project' is complete by tomorrow as we will be having a celebration of learning in class! The class did a self reflection and group reflection for the 'Plate Tectonics Project' and then we moved onto this next set of earth science notes!
Today was the last day to work on the 'Plate Tectonics Project'!
Nice work everyone :) Today students worked on their 'Plate Tectonics Project' and our Teaching Assistant talked about recent volcanic activity and earthquakes!
Please bring any supplies you still want to use for your project to school on Monday! The class started off with an attendance question and then did the following notes... After, we started the 'Plate Tectonics Project' where students are visually showing the 6 layers of the earth with a fault boundary of their choice with art supplies.
Please bring some rocks to school with you for Friday! As a class we watched he following videos and then had many good class discussions while finishing the notes from yesterday. For homework, please brainstorm ideas for your earth layers project on Thursday! Please bring some rocks to school with you for your crust too! Today was the start of a new unit - earth science! What is earth science? What do earthquakes, tsunamis, ocean trenches and volcanoes have in common?! How do we see movement of tectonic plates around us locally? What are the names of mountains globally and locally? We watched these videos, did group white boarding to answer the questions above, went outside and named all of the mountains we could see, and then took some notes. |
