Today we reviewed what colour is and how a camera obscura works by watching these videos... After, we listened to Halloween music and drew spooky eye balls and labelled the retina, iris, cornea, lens, pupil, focal point, optic nerve and sclera. Please finish your drawings at home if you did not complete them in class today! We watched the following videos to introduce physics and had some groups discussions. After, we started making making a pin hole camera with this worksheet... An attendance question was done to start the class and then we did the Elephant Toothpaste Lab! After, we did an Element Tour and then an outside Element Hunt.
Please email me your groups names, a list of the elements you found and your photos if you haven't already! There will be prizes on Friday for the winners :) The chemistry tests were marked as a class and reviewed at the same time - great work everyone!! After, we started our physics unit by introducing these questions and writing our answers on the whiteboards in groups.
-What is physics? -How do we see light? -What are particles and waves? Today we had our chemistry unit test!
Please come see me if you were not here today :) Class started with an attendance question and then we continued working on the chemistry review, the answers were gone over together as a class at the end.
Please use this review package to study for your chemistry test on Monday and bring your completed review package to class on Monday for marks! Density Questions and Bohr Model Ions were reviewed as a class then pages 260-265 were silent read. A collaborative document was made to go over study materials and possible questions for the review class tomorrow.
Calculating density was discussed as a class with the notes below and the following density calculations and definitions were taken in for completion marks. While all of this work was going on, the class learned how to use Bunsen burners one on one and performed the 'Imploding Pop Can' experiment - FUN!
Notes... -Density is a measurement of how much mass fits in a given volume. -Mass is a measurement of how much matter (p,n,e) there is in the object. -Volume is a measurement of how much 3D space the matter occupies. -Density is calculated by dividing the mass of an object by its volume 𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦= 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠/𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 Please hand in the 'Density & Definitions' worksheet for completion marks! Today we started off with an attendance question and then talked about SPACE! We looked at this website and talked about Jupiter. Next, we drew many 'Bohr Models' in the worksheet below. Then we moved onto a project while everyone one on one learned how to use a Bunsen burner.
Element Project must include... -Element Name, Atomic #, Atomic Mass, Element Symbol, Bohr Diagram and it must be on coloured paper so we can hang them around the classroom! Come see me if you want to see an example of one :) Please have your parents/guardians sign your progress report and hand it back on Friday! Today we took notes on the Kinetic Molecular Theory and Atomic Molecular Theory. Then pages 250-251 in the textbook were silently read. Questions 1-4 on page 251 were discussed as a class and then the 'Imploding Pop Can' experiment was demonstrated. Thank you to the students who brought their own cans! Lastly these videos were watched. Notes.. Kinetic Molecular Theory -All matter is made up of tiny particles -Different substances have different particles -The particles are in constant motion -The more energy the particles have, the faster they move -There is empty space between the particles Atomic Molecular Theory -All matter is composed of small, fast moving particles called atoms. These atoms can join together to form molecules. This theory contains many other theories that explain chemistry, and nature, and everything?! A work block was given for students to finish up their 'Build an Atom Activity' and then move onto getting five stars in all four chemistry games offered on that same PHET website on the worksheet.
Please show me in person, or send me a screen shot, of your five stars in each of the four games! Today we started off with an attendance question, then listened to the periodic table song, then we did a 'Periodic table Scavenger Hunt' in groups and took notes on protons, neutrons, quarks, leptons, electrons, watched an atom video and quarks video. After, we went to the library and worked on the 'Build an Atom' activity. Notes... -Protons (positive charge) and neutrons (zero charge) are made of quarks are held together in the nucleus by a strong nuclear force. -Electrons (negative charge) are a type of lepton and are held at a distance from the nucleus through electromagnetism. Please hand in your 'Periodic table Scavenger Hunt' and 'Build an Atom' activity! Today was a work block to finished up the questions and matter assignment that was started yesterday.
Please hand in your question answers and Phase Changes assignment! Today everyone read page 252-253 and answered questions 1-4 on page 253. Next, the class drew out figure 7.5A into their hand written notes from last week on matter. Then the class went down to the computer lab to start the Phase Changes assignment on Teams (link to the right).
