Today is Truth and Reconciliation Day, please take the time to learn, reflect and listen.
The class started off with an attendance question, then we did some hand written notes on matter, then we drew out the data table form lab 7-1 on page 247 and completed lab 7-1. After, we played around with this website and then read page 184-186 from the textbook at the forest school.
Handwritten notes on Matter… Define matter, atom, molecule, element, compound, solid, liquid, gas and what is KMT? Please hand your data table in from the lab! Work time given to finish written section of the Gummy bear Lab and then we went over the analysis questions at the end of 'Guided Notes 2'. After, the class coloured in this Periodic Table of Elements.
The Indigenous Educators did an activity about Truth and Recalculation with the class and then pg. 152-155 and questions #1-5 where all read out loud and discussed verbally as a class.
Please do those questions if you were not here today! The Gummy Bear Lab results were observed and recorded. The written results section was worked on and some students moved onto the analysis questions at the bottom of 'Guided Notes 2'.
The written results section should include these 10 words in a written paragraph and relate it to the lab – data, qualitative, quantitative, variable, control group, experimental group, independent variable, dependant variable, hypothesis and scientific method. Please hand your 'Data Sheet' and written results section! Today we started with an attendance question then moved onto 'Guided Notes 2'. We did a review on lab safety by doing this lab safety worksheet and then did the Gummy Bear Lab! There is a data sheet attached that Ms. Murray made - make sure to add a spot to your own data sheet to record your data next class!
The materials are listed in the 'Data Sheet' below and the lab was done through argument driven inquiry, the students were only told they had to have five different solutions. Please hand in your lab safety review before you start the lab and please record your own data during the lab! Paper Bridges Experiment!
We started off by examining local and international bridges then became engineers for the day. If you would like to do this experiment because you were away... -Create a purpose, hypothesis, materials list (below) and record your results on a lined piece of paper -Your materials can only include 8 pieces of paper, weights, scale, scissors and tape -The base of your bridge must be a piece of paper folded 'veggie burger' style and it must be free standing! ie. you can only build up, not out/around, and you cannot tape it to anything. Hint: building down will not help your bridge, build up. -Once your design is done test the bridge and record how much weight it held Hand your purpose, hypothesis, materials and results in! *UPDATE - It was brought to my attention that the sustainability of this experiment should be questioned because of so much paper being used (thank you for bringing this up!!) - Now that the experiment is done, what can we do with the bridges? Still open for suggestions and we will decide as a class. Woo! Friday! 'Guided Notes 1' was finished, we watched this video, got into random groups of three again and made hypothesis and handed them in this time for feedback, drawings were completed from yesterday and hung up on the wall. Please hand in your nature drawing! Today we started off with an attendance question and then a group white boarding activity focusing on these questions...
1. What is science? 2. How is science done? 3. What does it mean to be a scientist? Then we filled in 'Guided Notes 1', practiced making a hypothesis in random groups of three and drew what our favourite part of nature is to hang on the wall :) Today I officially introduced myself, we made group popsicle sticks, played scattegories and completed self-assessments for the Inquiry Projects that were due last class. We also watched the video below on giving descriptive feedback... Please come speak to me about doing a self-assessment if you were not here this day! Library computers were booked to work on Famous Scientist Inquiry Projects.
The project can be found on Teams - linked on the right. Please hand this project in if you have not already! |
