Today we started off class with an attendance question and then finished up our 'Biology Journal' - Congrats on finishing the biology unit everyone! Students who finished early were encouraged to do a science word search & cross word, sperm & ovary microscope drawings, OR decorate their biology journal.
I hope you have a wonderful holidays :) Today, we started with interactive case study on chromosomes and gender and then we gathered for a story and some hot chocolate in the Tipi outside the school with one of the Indigenous Educators. After, we watched these quick videos and then worked on our 'Biology Journal's! https://media.hhmi.org/biointeractive/click/testing-athletes/ The 'Biology Journals' will be due at the end of class tomorrow! (Friday the 16th) The class completed and checked their worksheets from last class and then took the following notes... These notes will help you with your final project... we also watched these videos... Notes... Cancer = uncontrollable mitosis (pg. 54-55) Asexual Reproduction = binary, fission, budding, fragmentation, spore formation, and vegetative reproduction (see handout from last class and pg. 57-59) Flower Reproduction = Sexual Reproduction. Hermaphrodite - female and male reproductive systems on the same organism. (see flower handout and pg. 83-86) Internal & External Fertilization Tests = Genetically engineering agriculture and selective breeding. During pregnancy: ultra sounds, amniocentesis, chronic villus sampling, and egg collection. (pg. 93-96 &130-131) Please read pages 123-125 & 127-128 for Thursday's class! Here is the final project for anyone who wants to start early :) The class decided on a new seating plan and got a lot of work handed back to them. Next, we went over the homework check form last class and answered the final round of anonymous questions - thank you again for all yours amazing questions everyone. After, we revisited meiosis and expanded our knowledge on asexual reproduction in hopes to dive deeper into the advantages and disadvantages of asexual and sexual reproduction.
Please complete the meiosis portion of this worksheet for homework if you did not have enough time to finish it in class today! The class started with a home work check. Today, we took the following notes on the menstrual cycle, watched this video on pregnancy, and had some great class discussions about this worksheet below and pregnancy. Notes... (based on a 28 day cycle) Day 1-5 = Menstrual Phase = Menstruation is caused by a decrease in estrogen and progesterone. Day 6-13 = Proliferate Phase = Ova (eggs) develops and endometrium (uterus lining) thickens. Day 14 = Ovulation = Spike in estrogen, LH, and FSH and progesterone starts to increase. Day 15-28 = Secretory Phase = Endometrium still thickening and progesterone increases. Estrogen = regulates menstrual cycle (ovulation and menstruation). Progesterone = maintains pregnancy. Decrease in progesterone will lead to menstruation. Luteinizing Hormone (LH) = Regulates the ovum (egg) being released. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) = Stimulates growth of the ovaries and ova. The class had the opportunity to see a live music performance to start the day off and then we talked about the menstrual cycle. We also compared the human egg and sperm cells on this website...
https://learngendev.azurewebsites.net/content/cells/scale/ Please come to class with this graph drawn out on Friday and read pages 117-120 and 79-81 for homework! We learned about the male reproductive system today by doing this worksheet together and having some great class discussions.
Please complete this for homework if you did not finish it in class! We learned about the female reproductive system today by doing this worksheet together and having some great class discussions.
Please complete this for homework if you did not finish it in class! The class watched the following video on meiosis and then did an understanding check of labelling the male and female reproductive systems. After, students defined each part and we added the following because we think the textbook missed a few... anus, urethra, scrotum, clitoris, labia and pubic hair. Please finish these definitions for homework if you did not have enough time in class and bring a question to ask anonymously to class on Monday about the female and male reproduction systems! |
